What is Leptin and How is it Affecting Your Weight?
What is leptin and how is it affecting your weight?
Leptin is more commonly known as your satiety hormone. It’s the hormone that sends a signal to your brain when you are full. It’s basically your body’s natural appetite suppressor. When leptin is in balance, you are more likely to feel satisfied after a meal and stop eating when you’re full. Generally speaking, this can help you maintain a healthy weight.
Some people build up a resistance to leptin, however, and this can cause a number of problems. If you have leptin resistance, your brain doesn’t hear the message that your body is full, so you may still feel hungry even if you’ve had enough to eat. This can lead to overeating and weight gain.
5 Symptoms of Leptin Resistance
The following symptoms could indicate that you have leptin resistance:
Feeling hungry all the time even though you are eating 3 meals a day.
A feeling that you need “a little something” after a meal.
Cravings for sweets or refined carbohydrates.
Difficulty losing weight or keeping it off.
Weight gain around the middle.
What can you do about it?
One of the ways you can combat leptin resistance is to cut back on sugar and refined carbohydrates. In my health coaching programs, I give my clients a hormone symptom survey at the beginning and end of the program. One of the hormone imbalances I look at in the hormone balance assessment is leptin resistance. My clients have seen amazing results in reducing their leptin resistance symptoms. On average, they see a 58% reduction in leptin resistance symptoms. Pretty cool, huh!
You have the ability to change your health and your hormones. Cutting back on sugar is a great place to start. I’m happy to help you on this journey. My individual health coaching programs are great options for helping you naturally balance your hormones.
